So what is voga alla veneta?

Ever been to Venice, Italy and seen a gondolier rowing a gondola on the Grand Canal? Maybe you even took a ride in a gondola. Did you see other types of boats on the water where the rowers where rowing standing up and pushing to propel their boat, just like those gondoliers? That's voga alla veneta or Venetian-style rowing.

There are many types of Venetian boats in Venice - not just gondolas. And just as Venice is not the only place in the world where people row Venetian-style, there are other types of boats outside of Venice that can also be rowed
Venetian-style.

VAVA Inc. offers you the opportunity to row like a Venetian here in Australia.

Welcome to a new way to exercise and rediscover the world - solo or with friends.

Serenity sandolo, AUSTRALIA

The Serenity sandolo is an Australian take on the classic Venetian sandolo. Designed by Dr Kim Klaka, MRINA*, the Serenity is shorter, wider and higher on the sides than a typical sandolo. With a 6mm marine plywood core covered in fibreglass, the Serenity is ideal for Australian conditions and weighs only 130kgs.

iL BARCè
PAVIA, ITALY

The barcè is an aluminium version of a traditional wooden boat found on the Ticino River, Italy. Popular with rowing clubs in Pavia and other towns on the river, this aluminium boat is virtually indestructible, requires little to no maintenance and can be rowed in all weather conditions including rain.
VAVA INC. is seeking funds to build any or all of these boats here in Australia in order to give members and the general public the opportunity to learn and practice this dynamic form of rowing.

One of the goals of VAVA is to take groups of suitably trained members to Venice, Italy and row with local Venetian clubs in a variety of Venetian boats exploring the canals and islands that make up the magical world that is Venice. There are also other Venetian rowing clubs in Germany (Hamburg), France, England (Oxford) and Malta (Valetta) that are keen to host Australian Venetian-style rowers.
