a cHAMPION IN OUR MIDST
We have an Italian Venetian rowing champion on our VAVA Inc. Management Committee. Actually, she’s an Australian who is a national champion in Italy.
Jane Caporal, originally from Perth WA, has lived in Venice, Italy for years. Married to a dinky-di Venetian with two grown up sons and who recently became a first-time grandmother, Jane is currently one of the reigning Senior Women’s doubles champions for the VIP 7.50 for 2021 in Italy.
VIP stands for voga in piedi – literally rowing on your feet or standing - an alternative way of saying voga alla veneta or Venetian rowing. The VIP 7.50 is an all-aluminium boat designed for Venetian rowing that is 7.50 meters long. It is a relatively new class of boat used for racing in Italy and potentially one day here in Australia too.
Jane definitely has form as a champion. Previously, she won the Italian National Championships for doubles in 2016, 2017 and 2018 as well as getting silver and bronze for valesana (another style of Venetian rowing using two oars crossed) since 2016. When she’s not being an athlete training up to five days a week, Jane operates her own Venetian rowing association – Row Venice where she gives tourists to Venice the opportunity to row like a Venetian.
Row Venice mainly employs other female Venetian rowing athletes as instructors to give them some income to support them in their own athletic careers.
Jane now owns the original Serenity Sandolo built in Perth by designer Dr Kim Klaka so that whenever she comes back to visit her family in Perth, she will have a boat to row when she gets here.
Jane has already been and will continue to be a huge asset towards VAVA’s goal of establishing rowing as a new and unique sport in Australia.
